38 Ethiopian nationals repatriated from Thailand
Addis Ababa, January 24, 2025 (FMC) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today confirmed that some 38 Ethiopian nationals who were facing dire situation in Thailand have been repatriated to their home country.
According to the Ministry, the returnees were detained Thailand after they escaped human traffickers in Myanmar.
They were released from detention thanks to the efforts by the Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi, India. The Embassy recently sent a delegation to Thailand to secure the release of Ethiopian nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that some of the returnees who were trying to escape from human traffickers around Myanmar and enter Thailand were detained because they did not have legal documents.
In related news, 359 Ethiopian nationals have been repatriated from Lebanon and Saudi Arabia this week, the East African nation’s Ministry of Women and Social Affairs confirmed today.
According to the Ministry’s data, some 90,101 Ethiopian nationals have been repatriated from Saudi Arabia to their home country since the government commenced the mission back in April 2024.
