Ethio-Engineering aiming to manufacture electric vehicles in Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, January 29, 2025 (FMC) – Ethio-Engineering Group announced that it has been making preparations to manufacture electric vehicles in Ethiopia.
The group CEO, Suleiman Dedefo, told local news agency ENA that there is abundant lithium in Ethiopia, a key component for electric vehicle battery production.
Although the raw lithium is exported at low price to foreign battery manufacturers at present, the group is actively pursuing collaborations with technology providers to process the mineral locally for domestic battery manufacturing.
According to Suleiman, Ethio-Engineering Group has 550 highly skilled engineers it could use to produce electric vehicles.
Leveraging their expertise, the group will start the assembly of electric public transportation and automobiles, he added.
In harmony with Ethiopia’s broader environmental initiatives like the green legacy projects, the introduction of electric cars will serve as a pivotal step in curbing pollution and reducing the nation’s reliance on petroleum-fueled vehicles.
Ethio-Engineering Group (EEG) is a governmental business enterprise re-established in September 2020 under the FDRE Council of Ministers regulation No. 475/2020.
The main purpose of the re-establishment of the group is to enable it play a leading role in the development of heavy industries in the country towards meeting the national vision of transforming to an industrial-led economy.
