Second phase of productive urban safety net program launched in Tigray region

Addis Ababa, April 14, 2025 (FMC) – The second phase of the Productive Urban Safety Net Program (UPSNP) was officially launched today in Mekelle City, aiming to support low-income residents in the Tigray Region.

Funded by the Ethiopian federal government with a budget exceeding 670 million birr, the program is set to benefit over 3,447 households. Each participating household is reported to handle at least four family members.

Speaking at the launch event, Mekelle City Safety Net Program Coordinator, Mr. Teshale Berhane, noted that the second round of the initiative will engage beneficiaries in various income-generating activities over a three-year period, with the goal of enabling them to transition to sustainable livelihoods.

Meanwhile, 3,215 heads of households who participated in the first phase of the program are scheduled to graduate next month, marking a significant milestone in the effort to enhance urban resilience and reduce poverty.
