Addis Ababa, March 31, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Culture and Sports has signed a contract with China Communications Construction Company LTD (CCCC) to complete the remaining works of Adey Ababa International Stadium Phase II Lot 2.
Minister of Culture and Sports, Ms. Shewit Shanka, and Xin Bin, Deputy General Manager of CCCC, signed the agreement today in Addis Ababa.
During the signing ceremony, Minister Shewit highlighted the progress made in sports development over the past seven years and emphasized that the contract marks a crucial step toward completing the stadium.
“Through the Prime Minister’s diplomatic efforts, we secured $57 million from the Abu Dhabi government seven years ago, which has significantly advanced Phase II Lot 1 construction,” Shewit stated.
The contract, valued at nearly $137 million (18.6 billion Birr), will enable the continuation of Phase II Lots 2 and 3. Once completed, the stadium will meet international standards set by CAF and FIFA, making it eligible to host major global sporting events.
“This agreement is a major milestone for sports development,” Minister Shewit added.
Xin Bin reaffirmed CCCC’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule.
“With over 20 years of experience in Ethiopia, we understand the importance of this world-class project. We pledge to utilize our resources and expertise to ensure its timely completion,” he said.
Mesele Haile, General Manager of MH Engineering and project advisor, provided insights into the project’s scope. He detailed the remaining work, including finishing tasks from Phase I and the complex stadium roof construction, which accounts for a significant portion of the budget.
The stadium’s total ground area and facilities will align with international standards, including FIFA, CAF, and World Athletics requirements. The project, expected to be completed within two years, includes FIFA-grade roofing, cutting-edge technology installations, and premium spectator seating.
The completed venue will feature 1,200 restrooms, 800 handwashing stations, comprehensive field work, and advanced roofing and technology systems.
The Adey Ababa International Stadium is set to become a premier sports and entertainment hub, significantly contributing to the sporting landscape.
