Deputy PM Temesgen calls for bold investment in education to unlock Africa’s future

Addis Ababa, April 28, 2025 (FMC) – Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Temesgen Truneh, has called for bold investment and visionary action in education to drive Africa’s transformation, emphasizing that education remains the foundation of progress and the engine of lasting change.

Speaking at the opening of the Innovation Africa 2025 Ministerial Summit in Addis Ababa, Mr. Temesgen underscored the urgent need to equip Africa’s growing youth population with the skills and knowledge needed to compete and lead in a rapidly changing global landscape.

“Throughout history, great nations have risen to prominence on the strength of an educated and empowered citizenry,” he said. “Africa is a continent of vibrant, ambitious youth — and it is our duty to build systems that enable them to innovate, compete, and lead.”

Organized by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with African Brains, the three-day summit — being held under the theme “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century” — has brought together ministers, education leaders, and professionals from across the continent. Participants are expected to forge partnerships, exchange innovative ideas, and craft tangible solutions aimed at expanding access to quality, innovation-driven education.

Highlighting Ethiopia’s own efforts, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the country is working to become a hub for education and skills development by investing in new schools, improving infrastructure, and expanding digital connectivity. “Here in Ethiopia, we are working to become a hub for education and skills training. We are building new schools. We are strengthening infrastructure. We are expanding digital connectivity — because we understand that the future will belong to those who prepare for it today.” he stressed.

While acknowledging the progress made, Mr. Temesgen emphasized that much work remains to be done. “Across Africa, we still have a journey ahead of us — to realize the full promise of education and digital transformation. But if we invest boldly, if we act with vision and unity, there is no limit to what our next generation can achieve,” he affirmed.

Mr. Temesgen also thanked Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Innovation and Technology, and Ministry of Labor and Skills for their leadership in organizing the summit. “Your contributions have made this great conference possible — and together, we are shaping a better future for all,” he concluded.

The Innovation Africa 2025 Summit is expected to deliver actionable outcomes that will strengthen education systems, empower communities, and unlock the potential of millions of young Africans.
