ECSA Health Community says working to Enhance regional health systems through collaborative initiatives

Addis Ababa, November 21, 2024 (FBC) – Dr. Martin Matu, Director of Programs and Projects at the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA), outlined the organization’s comprehensive efforts to strengthen health systems across member states. Established in 1974, ECSA aims to promote regional health collaboration among countries in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Dr. Matu emphasized the organization’s focus on key health issues, including nutrition, food security, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and family health, particularly targeting reproductive and adolescent health. ECSA is actively working on health financing, advocating for budget allocations, and ensuring universal health coverage to enhance access to services.

A significant aspect of ECSA’s initiatives is the Health Emergency Preparedness Response and Resilience program, funded by the World Bank, which currently includes eight participating nations. This multi-phase program aims to bolster health systems for better response to health emergencies, particularly in a region facing frequent disease outbreaks and natural disasters.

To address these challenges, ECSA is also leveraging technology and has developed an artificial intelligence tool for disease screening, enhancing early detection of health issues. Dr. Matu remarked on the importance of integrated disease surveillance and preparedness, stating that comprehensive risk assessment plans are crucial for efficient emergency responses.

In addition, ECSA is raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, stressing the need for conservation of medical resources. The ongoing initiatives underscore ECSA’s commitment to improving health outcomes and fostering resilience in the face of regional health challenges.
