Ethio Telecom unveils newly built ultra-fast EV charging station in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, February 11, 2025 (FMC) – Today, Ethio Telecom, in its bold initiative to stepping toward supporting Ethiopia’s growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, has unveiled its newly built ultra-fast EV charging station in Addis Ababa. This initiative aligns with our company’s vision as a leading digital solutions provider and its slogan, “Bringing New Possibilities.”

The chargers are designed for efficiency, capable of replenishing batteries at a rate equivalent to traveling 1 km per second. Depending on the vehicle’s capabilities, they can fully charge compatible vehicles within 15 minutes, enabling rapid recharges for drivers on the go, according to the CEO of the company, Firehiwot Tamiru.

The chargers are powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize charging speed and power delivery based on individual vehicle battery requirements and user preferences. The new electric vehicle charging station is equipped with eight ultra-fast chargers, each offering a charging capacity of up to 600 KW, twelve super-fast chargers with a capacity of up to 500 KW, and level two smart pole chargers for emergency charging options.

The charging station operates 24/7 and is fully powered by telebirr SuperApp. Customers can independently use the service and settle the payment via telebirr to ensure a seamless and cashless transaction experience.

Ethio Telecom reaffirmed committment to leveraging digital innovation to build smart, efficient, and future-ready infrastructure to accelerate Ethiopia’s green economy initiative, specifically to transform the transportation sector through cutting-edge technology and digital solutions.
