Addis Ababa, February 13, 2025 (FMC) — At the ongoing International Conference on Irrigation and Climate-Resilient Production, Ethiopia’s Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa (PhD), highlighted the nation’s transformative strides in sustainable development and climate resilience.
Speaking at the conference, hosted by the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands of Ethiopia, Fitsum underscored the country’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s agricultural future under the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP)—a continental initiative championed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Central to Ethiopia’s achievements is the Green Legacy Initiative, a visionary nationwide reforestation campaign designed to combat climate change. Under this program, Ethiopia has planted an astounding 40 billion trees, increasing national forest coverage to 6%. A significant portion of these trees are fruit-bearing, enhancing both environmental sustainability and food security.
Ms. Fitsum also spotlighted the National Wheat Initiative, a groundbreaking program that has propelled Ethiopia to wheat self-sufficiency. Through a dual-season approach combining rain-fed and irrigation-based farming, the country has not only curtailed its reliance on imports but also fortified national food security.
Further strengthening Ethiopia’s agricultural resilience is the YeLemat Trufat (Bounty of the Basket) initiative, an integrated approach to food production that empowers communities to cultivate essential nutritious staples such as dairy and poultry. By ensuring both availability and accessibility of food, Ethiopia is fostering a robust and sustainable food system.
“These initiatives stand as global benchmarks for climate resilience and food security,” Fitsum asserted, emphasizing Ethiopia’s leadership in sustainable agricultural practices. The country’s innovative policies and commitment to environmental stewardship serve as a model not only for Africa but for the world, reinforcing its role as a trailblazer in the fight against climate change and food insecurity.
