National Strategy for electric vehicles approved

Addis Ababa, March 12, 2025 (FMC) – The draft national strategy for electric vehicles was approved today after a series of discussions with the relevant ministers and heads of institutions, the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics (MoTL) announced today.

The National Strategy for Electric Vehicles, prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, has been approved as the national strategy for Ethiopia to manage the sector for the next five years.

During the meeting, Mr. Alemu Sime, the Minister of Transport and Logistics stated that the expansion of electric vehicles is part of the country’s strategy in implementing a climate change-resilient green economy.

The Minister pointed out that his country is undertaking major initiatives to respond to climate change, including the Green Legacy initiative, underscoring the significance of ensuring the influx of electric vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector.

In replacing fuel-powered vehicles with EVs, the country can invest the cost of fuel on other infrastructures and by utilizing its abundant renewable energy resources in a bid to pursue national properity.

The Minister added that the electric vehicle strategy has great potential in terms of economic benefits, job creation, clean city construction and other aspects in addition to combating climate change. “The main objective of the strategy is to ensure sustainable mobility by promoting an accessible, inclusive, environmentally friendly, safe, and affordable production and supply of electric vehicles and the development of charging infrastructure in Ethiopia,” Alemu noted.

The strategy identifies the roles of stakeholders in the expansion of green transport and strengthens national coordination, he said, calling on all concerned parties to work with determination for its implementation of the national EVs strategy.

The Ministers who participated in the discussion, while approving the strategy, said that electric vehicles are pivotal to build the country’s resilient capacity through technology and expertise transfer.
