Addis Ababa, January 26, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has outlined a vision for transforming Jimma into an international city, emphasizing ten strategic directions. He advocates for the enhancement of high-quality and specialty coffee production as a cornerstone of this initiative. In addition, Ahmed aims to introduce a variety of organic tea products tailored for both local and global markets.
A key aspect of the plan includes utilizing natural fertilizers to ensure the production, packaging, and export of top-quality fruit. The Prime Minister also calls for improved standards in the export of beef, milk, poultry, and eggs to meet international benchmarks, as well as the development of a competitive spice industry by processing and packaging spices for global distribution.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of establishing factory-level production of internationally standardized wood products and the development of ceramic factories to create high-quality materials for local construction and export.
Tourism is another focal point of his vision, with plans to leverage Jimma’s rich natural, religious, and cultural heritage to position it as a prominent destination. Ahmed stressed the need to strengthen the region’s renowned spirit of peace and hospitality, while also enhancing work ethics and addressing harmful cultural practices. Through these initiatives, the Prime Minister aims to elevate Jimma’s status on the international stage.
