PM Abiy thanks Mr. Getachew for his role as head of Tigray Region Interim Administration

Addis Ababa, April 7, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has expressed his appreciation to Mr. Getachew Reda for his contribution as President of the Tigray Region Interim Administration over the past two years, after the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.

In a message conveyed in Tigrigna language with pictures of the Prime Minister and the outgoing interim regional administration president this afternoon, Premier Abiy acknowledged that Mr. Getachew had been serving in accordance with Article 62(9) of the FDRE Constitution, Proclamation No. 359/1995 Article 15(3), Regulation No. 533/2015, and the provisions of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.

Mr. Getachew assumed the presidency of the interim administration after the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) on November 2, 2022, in Pretoria, South Africa, between the Federal Government and the TPLF — an accordl that ended a two-year conflict in Ethiopia’s northern regions.

In his message, PM Abiy commended Mr. Getachew’s leadership and acknowledged his significant role in helping consolidate the peace gained in the aftermath of the conflict.

He emphasized the Federal Government’s recognition of Mr. Getachew’s contributions in cementing peace.

The Prime Minister also affirmed intention to continued collaboration and thanked Mr. Getachew for his efforts during his tenure as head of the interim regional administration.

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Abiy has recently called on residents of the Tigray region to submit their recommendations for the next president of the interim administration via an email address of the Prime Minister’s Office.
