Some 505 million quintals of agricultural produce obtained from “meher” harvest season – Ministry

Addis Ababa, January 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture announced that 505 million quintals of agricultural products have been harvested so far this meher season.

State Minister of Agriculture Meles Mekonnen made a statement regarding the current level of production in the agriculture and horticulture sector.

In his remarks, the state minister said that 20.4 million hectares of land were covered with various crops in the 2016/17 E.C. harvest season and 505 million quintals of produces have been obtained so far.

He recalled that the target for the meher harvest season was to produce more than 608 million quintals and stated that the current results are an indication that the production will exceed the target.

He also said that the target for the season is to produce 340 million quintals of wheat through rainfed and irrigation system.

Melese mentioned that in 2017 E.C., 4.27 million hectares of land was planned to be cultivated with irrigated wheat, yielding 173 million quintals of produce, and that 3.41 million hectares of land have been successfully cultivated so far.
