The 38th African Union Summit kicks off

Addis Ababa, February 15, 2025 (FMC) – The 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) kicked off in Addis Ababa.

At this year’s African Union Summit, which is underway under the theme “Justice for African and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, leaders are expected to deliberate on global and continental issues.

It has been indicated that the African Union’s institutional reforms, reparative justice, and continental peace and security are among the agendas to be discussed.

The summit will also discuss the implementation of the African Free Trade Area and continental trade and economic integration, agriculture and climate change, human rights, gender and youth empowerment, and institutional arrangements.

It has been announced that the Union will also discuss the ongoing efforts to obtain a permanent seat for Africa on the United Nations Security Council.

The assembly is also expected to elect a new commissioner to replace the outgoing Chairperson of the African Union.
