AU emphasizes strong alignment between South Africa’s G20 priorities and Agenda 2063

Addis Ababa, February 23, 2025 (FMC) – This week, the African Union, represented by Téte António, Angola’s Minister of External Relations and AU G20 Head of Delegation, alongside AU Sherpa Ambassador Albert Muchanga and AU Sous Sherpa Ms. Sara Silva, participated in the inaugural G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

In his address, António highlighted the strong alignment between South Africa’s G20 priorities and Agenda 2063, Africa’s comprehensive vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development, suggesting a promising opportunity for Africa’s advancement and global prosperity.

The African Union commended the emphasis on industrialization, employment, and reducing inequality, noting its resonance with the AU’s Strategic Framework for Inclusive Growth.

Additionally, the G20’s initiatives related to food security through the Food Security Task Force align with the AU’s goals, particularly the Post-Malabo Agriculture Development Programme aimed at enhancing agricultural capacity and ensuring food security across the continent. The AU further appreciated the G20’s commitment to artificial intelligence, data governance, and innovation, which complement the AU’s Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the “AI for Africa” Initiative.

Moreover, the AU reiterated its dedication to the G20 Compact with Africa, urging all African nations and G20 members to actively participate in this crucial initiative to foster economic reforms and attract investment. The AU also expressed support for the Cost of Capital Commission, which aims to tackle unfair credit rating practices leading to high interest rates for African countries.

The African Union welcomed the retrospective review of the G20’s progress over the last twenty years and expressed eagerness to contribute to its future endeavors.
