Corridor dev’t initiative gives huge impetus to urbanization in Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, December 26, 2024 (FMC) – The corridor development initiative is transforming Ethiopia’s national development framework by expanding urban infrastructure, Somali Region Chief Administrator and Executive Committee Member of Prosperity Party Mustafa Mohammed stated.
The initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to improve the quality of life for communities in both urban and rural areas has significantly been changing urban development.
A two-day meeting of the ruling Prosperity Party Executive Committee was recently convened to discuss national and party issues.
During the meeting, Chief Administrator Mustafa observed that the corridor development initiative is being executed effectively.
Highlighting that 57 percent of the global population lives in cities, he emphasized that the corridor development initiative is designed to accommodate urban growth.
The global projection for urban population within the next 30 years is 70 percent, and “this prediction has shaped the goal of establishing a modern urban system,” Mustafa added.
The corridor development initiative, which began in the capital city of Ethiopia has expanded its scope and is being executed in regional cities, he stated, noting that this reflects the long-term vision behind the project.
According to the chief administrator, the initiative includes building essential infrastructures such as electricity networks, bridges, asphalt roads, and other facilities that underscore its strategic significance.
He pointed out that the first phase of corridor development in Addis Ababa has led to significant improvements, providing complete infrastructure, as well as comfortable living and entertainment spaces for residents.
“With the expansion to regional cities, the initiative has also played a role in advancing Ethiopia’s urbanization efforts,” Mustafa underscored.
Although the positive results of new ideas and innovations often become evident in the long term, he pointed out that Ethiopia’s corridor development achievements demonstrate the nation’s capacity to implement projects rapidly and effectively.
According to the chief administrator, the Somali regional capital Jigjiga has emerged as one of the fastest-growing cities in East Africa after the reforms,
He added that local communities have recognized the benefits of corridor development and are actively engaged in its implementation, as reported by local news agency ENA.
Mustafa further noted that the development initiative, along with the other various projects throughout Ethiopia, is not only making places visually appealing but also attracting tourists, boosting tourism activities and making them more comfortable and hospitable for residents and visitors alike.
