Two key strategies unveiled to advance Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey

Addis Ababa, January 27, 2025 (FMC) –  The Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Temesgen Tiruneh, today unveiled two key draft strategies that are crucial to drive success of the country’s digital transformation.

The Deputy Prime Minister unveiled the strategies while inaugurating an exhibition and workshop focused on Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey and future initiatives at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa.

The strategies are said to be Digital Government and E-Commerce strategies.

It was mentioned that the Digital Government Strategy focuses on modernizing government services using digital technologies to ensure the benefit of citizens.

The E-Commerce Strategy, the Deputy Prime Minister explained, is to enable the domestic and international e-commerce markets to be operational in Ethiopia.

On the occasion, Temesgen noted, “During a time of remarkable reforms, we’ve taken bold steps to build a thriving digital economy. Today, we showcased Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey through an exhibition and workshop, highlighting the progress we’ve made together. It has been two years since the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy has been put to effect to guide our efforts to harness the power of technology for growth and opportunity.”

With expanding digital infrastructure, a rapidly advancing financial system, and greater private sector engagement in modernizing government services, the foundation for a digital future is taking shape, he asserted.

Temesgen stated that his government remains committed to ensuring that Ethiopia’s digital transformation is not only impactful but also secure and inclusive—empowering citizens every step of the way.

He also confirmed that the government is preparing to launch the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy, setting the stage for the next five years of innovation and progress.

Today’s event was attended by senior government officials, regional chief administrators, city mayors, and representatives of higher education institutions.

It was also mentioned that the country is in the final year of the implementation of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy.
