Diplomats praise Ethiopia’s commitment to welcoming and hosting refugees

Addis Ababa, February 24, 2025 (FMC) — Ambassadors of various countries said that Ethiopia’s commitment to welcoming and hosting refugees is commendable and deserves support.

The diplomats praise Ethiopia’s generosity in hosting refugees from various countries after their visit to the refugee camps in Gambella region earlier today. Accordingly, ambassadors of Canada, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Finland and Luxembourg visited refugee camps in Gambella region.

The ambassadors commended Ethiopia for its significant contribution to welcoming and hosting refugees from various countries, including South Sudanese refugees, and ensuring their peaceful coexistence.

They assured their respective countries’ continued backing to Ethiopia in hosting and protecting refugees.

Director General of Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), Ms. Teyba Hassen, said that her country’s government is providing the necessary support and assistance to the refugees, noting that they are receiving services from social and economic institutions in Gambella region and are also receiving humanitarian assistance and protection.

She also called on the international community scale up its support the refugees and the host country—Ethiopia.

Gambella Regional State Chief Administrator Ms. Alemitu Umod said that her regional government has welcomed many refugees and is providing assistance by sharing its limited resources, including shelter.

She also indicated that the protection and support provided to refugees will continue to be strengthened and called on stakeholders to strengthen their support.
