Ethiopia Expands Domestic Ammunition Production, Moves Toward Export – PM Abiy
Addis Ababa, March 5, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has announced that Ethiopia has significantly enhanced its capacity to manufacture ammunition domestically, reaching the level of exporting its production.
During a visit to the Hamicho Ammunition Engineering Industry today, the Prime Minister highlighted the country’s progress in self-sufficiency, noting that while previous attempts were made to produce ammunition locally, Ethiopia remained dependent on imports until three years ago.
“Ethiopia, as a large nation, must ensure a smooth generational transition while strengthening its self-sufficiency,” he stated. “Although there were prior efforts to manufacture bullets domestically, the country relied on imports. Now, Ethiopia has developed the capability not only to meet its own needs but also to export ammunition. This progress strengthens our national defense and contributes to broader self-reliance.”
He further emphasized that achieving true independence requires more than military capacity, stressing the importance of local production in essential sectors. “A nation must be able to produce its own food, clothing, and medicine to achieve complete self-sufficiency,” he added.
The expansion of Ethiopia’s domestic ammunition production aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance national defense capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
