Ethiopia, IGAD vow to strengthen cooperation for regional peace, stability
Addis Ababa, February 14, 2025 (FMC) – Foreign Affairs Minister Gedion Timothewos (PhD) met with Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), for a discussion on regional peace and security.
The two leaders focused on ways to strengthen IGAD-Ethiopia cooperation, with the aim of promoting regional integration and stability. Foreign Minister Gedion emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting regional peace and stability, as well as its role in promoting economic integration and development.
Minister Gedion noted that IGAD’s strategic goals align with Ethiopia’s interests in the region and expressed his country’s intention to work closely with the organization. He also assured IGAD of Ethiopia’s full support for its efforts to resolve conflicts in the region.
In response, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu commended Ethiopia for ratifying the new IGAD Treaty and urged the country to continue strengthening its crucial support and engagement with IGAD as a member state. He called on Ethiopia to maintain its supportive role as a member state, promoting cooperation and engagement with the organization.
