Ethiopia, Kenya move to expand One-Stop Border Services for faster trade

Addis Ababa, March 26, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Kenya have engaged in discussions on strengthening customs collaboration, with a focus on the One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) initiative.

The meeting brought together officials from the Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and other relevant stakeholders from both nations to explore ways to expand border service stations and enhance cooperation on customs matters.

Speaking at the event, ECC Chief Commissioner Debele Kabeta underscored the critical role of customs administrations in facilitating trade and strengthening border controls.

He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among customs institutions to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

Mr. Debele highlighted the ongoing collaboration between ECC and KRA, stressing the importance of further reinforcing these ties. He pointed out that the Moyale One-Stop Border Post, which has been operational for several years, has significantly expedited customs procedures by eliminating redundant inspections.

He further noted that Africa’s economic integration is gaining momentum through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other regional economic blocs.

In this regard, he affirmed that the Ethiopian Customs Commission is actively working to position Ethiopia as a key player in this process.

Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia, George M. Orina, emphasized that the establishment of additional border service centers will play a pivotal role in accelerating economic development in both countries.

Discussions also focused on the potential construction of new joint border service stations in Suftu and Ramu, aiming to enhance trade and strengthen people-to-people ties.

Following the discussions, the Ethiopian Customs Commission and the Kenya Revenue Authority agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further solidify their cooperation.
