Ethiopia participates in the 1st BRICS Sherpas/Sous Sherpas meeting for 2025

Addis Ababa, February 25, 2025 (FMC) — An Ethiopian delegation led by Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, National Bank Governor and Ethiopias BRICS Sherpa, with the participation of Ambassador Mesganu Arga, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ethiopia’s Sous Sherpa, is participating in the First Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas for 2025 that started today in Brasilia, Brazil.

The meeting was opened by Mauro Viera, Brazil’s Minister of External Affairs.

On the occasion, Mamo reiterated Ethiopia’s longstanding support of multilateralism and collective security centred on the UN system.

He stated that a reformed global system is needed to be able to generate and execute solutions to multiple and complex global challenges.

The Sherpa said that becoming a member of the New Development Bank is one of Ethiopia’s key priorities for 2025. He emphasized the need for expanded intra-BRICS economic cooperation and called for a commitment to the implementation of core objectives, programs, and initiatives within the BRICS platform.

Brazil’s BRICS 2025 Presidency, which Ethiopia welcomes, anchors on six key priorities: global health, the reform of global governance, climate finance, artificial intelligence governance, global south cooperation, and BRICS institutional development.

The meeting continues to deliberate on various agenda items for two days, according to the Ethiopian foreign ministry’s social media post.
