Ethiopia positions its pharmaceutical sector for continental market expansion

Addis Ababa, April 1, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is taking significant steps to enhance its pharmaceutical industry, aiming to transition from dependency on imports to a robust domestic production base.

Speaking at the Ethiopia-India Trade and Business Forum held at the Skylight Hotel, Zeleke Temesgen, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), emphasized the country’s commitment to fostering self-sufficiency and increasing exports in line with Ethiopia’s 10-year national development plan.

A key driver of this transformation is the Qilinto Special Economic Zone, which offers attractive tax incentives and exemptions to encourage investment in local pharmaceutical production.

Zeleke invited Indian investors to explore opportunities in pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical equipment production, and health infrastructure, and digital health, sectors identified as having significant growth potential.

India’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Anil Khmer Rai, commended Ethiopia’s pro-business policy reforms over the past six years and urged Indian investors to take advantage of the favorable investment climate.

The forum brought together over 80 Indian companies engaged in pharmaceuticals, medical inputs, and materials manufacturing, providing them with insights into Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical investment landscape.
