Ethiopia reaffirms commitment to promote green transportation: Minister

Addis Ababa, April 1, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia is committed to advancing green transportation by leveraging its renewable energy potential, Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime affirmed.

The minister made this statement during a meeting with representatives of Shanghai Launch Design Automotive Company, led by the company’s manager, Wu Shaohua.

During the discussions, the Chinese delegation was briefed on investment opportunities in Ethiopia’s transport and logistics sector.

Mr. Alemu said, key factors such as Ethiopia’s strategic geographical location, expanding economy, strong government backing, tax incentives, and an ample skilled workforce were highlighted as conducive conditions for investment in the sector.

“We are dedicated to promoting green transportation by utilizing our country’s renewable energy sources,” Alemu stated.

He emphasized that investing in electric vehicles is both viable and beneficial in Ethiopia, reiterating the government’s support for companies engaged in electric vehicle production.

Alemu further noted that beyond economic gains, the presence of Shanghai Launch Design Automotive Company in Ethiopia would help strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Ethiopia and China.

In response, company representatives provided an overview of Shanghai Launch Design Automotive Company’s expertise in vehicle manufacturing and marketing. Manager Wu Shaohua expressed the company’s interest in establishing electric vehicle production in Ethiopia.

The delegation highlighted that the company collaborates with major global automobile manufacturers, including Tesla, BYD, Toyota, Foton, and Renault, among others.

They also revealed plans to manufacture a range of vehicles in Ethiopia, including automobiles, buses, trucks, electric air taxis, and unmanned vehicles.
