Addis Ababa, March 11, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva and Vienna, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, delivered a statement at the 92nd Meeting of the UNHCR Standing Committee, currently taking place from March 11-13, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ambassador Tsegab highlighted Ethiopia’s deep rooted tradition of hospitality, emphasizing that the country currently hosts over 1 million refugees, asylum-seekers, and internally displaced persons, reaffirming Ethiopia’s longstanding commitment to providing refuge to those in need.

He noted that Ethiopia has made significant progress in fulfilling its pledges from the 2019 and 2023 Global Refugee Forums. Key achievements include expanding refugee access to electricity, education, and national ID services, as well as transitioning to a settlement-based refugee support model. Additionally, Ethiopia has strengthened migration data management and introduced new policies to support internally displaced persons.

While expressing gratitude for the support received from UNHCR and partners, the Ambassador called for increased international assistance to help Ethiopia and other host nations address the challenges of displacement.

Ethiopia remains committed to upholding its humanitarian obligations, despite current funding challenges, and calls for stronger global solidarity to sustainable refugee response.
