Ethiopia to establish third maritime academy at Arba Minch University

Addis Ababa, March 29, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA) and Arba Minch University have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Maritime Academy, making it the third such institution in the country.

The agreement aims to enhance Ethiopia’s capacity to train seafarers for the global market, expanding employment opportunities in the sector.

The new academy will be housed under Arba Minch University’s Institute of Technology, joining the Babogaya Logistics and Maritime Academy and the Ethiopian Maritime Training Institute.

The Ethiopian Maritime Authority has outlined an ambitious vision to position Ethiopia as Africa’s leading nation in logistics performance and among the top five globally by training highly skilled seafarers for the international workforce in 2030.
