Ethiopia, UAE seek to establish joint criminal investigation team
Addis Ababa, March 31, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates have initiated discussions to establish a joint criminal investigation team aimed at enhancing cooperation in the extradition of suspected criminals and the exchange of expertise in criminal investigations.
The talks took place in Addis Ababa during a meeting between General Demelash Gebre-Michael, Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Federal Police, and Lieutenant General Abdullah Mohammed, head of the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police, who led a delegation from the UAE.
On the occasion, Commissioner General Demelash highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two nations, particularly in the extradition of suspects and criminal investigations. He emphasized the current investigation into individuals believed to have committed crimes in Dubai and are now residing in Ethiopia.
He further revealed that both countries are working towards the extradition of wanted suspects and accountability through the formation of a joint criminal investigation team, in addition to facilitating the exchange of valuable experiences in the field.
For his part, Lt. General Abdullah expressed readiness to welcome Ethiopian Federal Police officials to Dubai for future joint investigation efforts, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to the strengthened partnership.
