Ethiopian envoy confers with Jordan’s Minister of Labour

Addis Ababa, February 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ambassador of Ethiopia to Jordan with permanent residence in Abu Dhabi, Oumer Hussein, engaged in discussions with Mr. Khaled Al-Bakkar, Minister of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to discuss the welfare and overall situation surrounding Ethiopian domestic workers in Jordan.

The Minister, Mr. Khaled Al-Bakka, highlighted the growing demand for Ethiopian workers in Jordan under the existing bilateral agreement between the two nations, according to the Ethiopian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

He also raised about the presence of illegal workers and agencies involved in illicit practices related to the employment of domestic workers.

Assuring cooperation, the Minister expressed a readiness to collaborate with Ambassador Oumer in addressing these challenges.

Ambassador Oumer reciprocated the sentiments of cooperation and gratitude, assuring the Minister of Ethiopia’s commitment to sending more worker while ensuring that the workers come through proper channels after adequate skill training.

Currently, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan hosts close to 40,000 Ethiopian domestic workers, underlining the importance of continued dialogue and joint efforts to ensure the protection and rights of these workers.

This diplomatic dialogue marks a positive step towards enhancing the mutual commitment of both nations to fostering productive cooperation in this crucial sector.
