Ethiopian MFA state minister emphasizes crucial need for independent Africa media that tell continent’s true story
Addis Ababa, February 12, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopian Foreign Affairs State Minister Mesganu Arga stressed today the urgency of independent media for Africa to craft its own narratives and properly communicate the continent’s true story to the global audience.
State Minister Mesganu told local news agency ENA that it is crucial for the continent to define and articulate its story in a balanced manner in order to deter the pervasive misrepresentation of Africa in the global media.
According to him, the negative portrayal of Africa as a “dark continent” has overshadowed the realities of a vibrant and emerging continent that significantly contributes to the global economy, peace, and security.
There are tremendous opportunities within Africa, which need to be communicated effectively to the global audience, he added, calling for a shift in narrative that recognizes the continent’s potential for trade and investment.
“Africa has been misrepresented in the global media arena, and we need to create and tell our own story… the stories and opportunities of Africa need to be communicated properly to the global audience,” Mesganu said.
In this respect, the state minister stressed the importance of establishing independent and balanced media for Africa that can tell the true story and history of Africa, thus reshaping the global perception of the continent.
Besides advocating for independent media for Africa, he pointed out the significance of efforts to secure Africa’s rightful representation in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Emphasizing the necessity of reforming the Security Council, the state minister said Africa must duly be represented in other global multilateral organizations, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, too.
“To make these multilateral organizations inclusive, the African Union (AU) is committed to addressing these issues in its Agenda 2063, ensuring that Africa is placed in its rightful position in global governance.”
