Ethiopia’s green transport initiatives set African example
Addis Ababa, April 4, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia is emerging as a leader in Africa’s green transportation sector, with ambitious government initiatives aimed at boosting domestic electric vehicle (EV) production.
State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bereo Hassan, expressed the nation’s commitment to both immediate and long-term EV development strategies.
The state minister noted that efforts are positioning Ethiopia as a leading model for green transportation in Africa, with a focus on meeting local transportation demands through the assembly of tailored electric vehicles.
The state minister stated that the government is aggressively promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption nationwide, prioritizing the transition from fuel-based transportation.
He also emphasized the expansion of Ethiopia’s EV charging infrastructure, assuring its continued and accelerated growth.
Ethiopia has launched a comprehensive short and long term strategy to domestically manufacture electric vehicles, with significant activities already in progress.
The country’s natural resources, which hold the potential for local EV battery production, he said, the government is developing a long-term plan to leverage these resources and establish Ethiopia as a leading EV battery manufacturer.
The government is also actively seeking collaboration and investment from international organizations to foster innovation and expertise in the electric transportation sector, he added.
Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable mobility was underscored by its recent hosting of over 700 international organizations, exporters, and leaders at the International Conference on Green Transport, per ENA.
