FAO commends Ethiopia’s leadership in agri-food systems transformation

Addis Ababa, April 15, 2025 (FMC) — The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has commended Ethiopia’s proactive approach to overhauling its agri-food systems, pledging strengthened support as the country pushes forward with a comprehensive and data-driven national strategy.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance Ms. Semereta Sewasew, Dr. David Laborde, Director of Agrifood Economics at the FAO, noted Ethiopia’s potential to become a model for other countries in the region.

He reaffirmed the FAO’s commitment to back the country’s efforts through technical assistance and enhanced cooperation.

Dr. Laborde praised the Ethiopian government’s readiness to address complex challenges across the food system—from production to consumption—emphasizing that Ethiopia’s inclusion as one of only five pilot countries under FAO’s global roadmap reflects international recognition of its leadership in this area.

State Minister Semereta welcomed the support, highlighting the opportunity to align Ethiopia’s national food systems strategy with FAO’s roadmap.

She underscored that the partnership is expected to catalyze policy reforms and innovative initiatives aimed at improving access to nutritious food and enhancing national well-being.
