Gen. Tadesse Worede appointed as head of Tigray Region Interim Administration
Addis Ababa, April 8, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed today that General Tadesse Worede has been appointed as the head of Tigray Region Interim Administration, replacing the outgoing Getachew Reda.
It is noteworthy that Mr. Getachew has been the president of interim administration since the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
“Over the past month, extensive discussions have taken place putting into consideration the Ethiopian Constitution, the Pretoria Agreement and the perspectives of the diplomatic community. Following the conclusion that a transitional regional government should continue—tasked with key responsibilities remaining after the end of Mr. Getachew Reda’s term, in accordance with the law—deliberations have been held on who is best suited to lead this next phase and achieve its objectives,” Premier Abiy said on his social media page.
PM Abiy confirmed, “Today, we have officially and peacefully implemented a program to facilitate the transfer of power, ushering in a new political culture. General Tadesse Worede, who served as Mr. Getachew’s deputy for the past two years, has been entrusted with this leadership role.”
He has a clear understanding of both the strengths and shortcomings of the previous administration, and many believe he is well-positioned to guide Tigray region through this critical transition, the Prime Minister said.
“It is my hope that he will seize this historic opportunity to help the people of Tigray region realize their aspirations for peace and development—just like their fellow citizens across the country—and in doing so, contribute meaningfully to Ethiopia and Africa as a whole,” the Premier underscored.
Images from the Premier’s social media post show that the handover ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Temesgen Truuneh, ministers, the African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, heads of missions and diplomats of various countries and international organizations stationed in Addis Ababa.
