GERD bonanza: Fishery at the Renaissance Dam sees extensive growth
Addis Ababa, December 28, 2024 (FMC) – The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) disclosed that fish production is being carried out on a large scale at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam reservoir and other water bodies in the country.
State Minister for Agriculture at the Ministry, Mr. Fikru Regasa, stated that the Ethiopian government has put policies, strategies and directions into action to increase the country’s capacity to produce quality and quantity of fish products.
To this end, fish production is being carried out on a large scale at the GERD reservoir and other water bodies in the country, Mr. Fikru noted, pointing out that the Ministry of Agriculture is planning to distribute 9.2 million fingerlings to different water bodies in the country in the current fiscal year.
He mentioned that 4.5 million young fish have been distributed in the process so far and confirmed that the effort will continue to be strengthened.
Extensive development work is being done in the field of aquaculture, especially at the Grand Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia, the state minister said, adding that 56 tons of fish was harvested two weeks ago.
Fikru stated that the ministry will provide the necessary support and assistance to those engaged in the development of the sector and called for the participation of investors to engage in the sector.
