Gonder city says ready to welcome guests, tourists for Timket holiday
Addis Ababa, December 28, 2024 (FMC) – The Gonder city administration has announced that it has concluded preparations for the celebration of the UNESCO-inscribed Timket holiday which will be celebrated on the 19th of January 2025.
During a public meeting presided over by the First Deputy Mayor of Gondar City Administration, Mr. Chalachew Dagnew, security forces and volunteers have assured readiness for the successful celebration of the annual religious holiday.
Stating that Gondar has now returned to its peaceful state, they invited local and international tourists to visit the ancient city and attend the Ethiopian Epiphany at the home of the Camelot of Africa.
Timket, also known as Ethiopian Epiphany, was registered on the List of Representatives of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in December 2019.
The festival of Timiket or Epiphany is celebrated across Ethiopia on January 19th or 20th in leap year, corresponding to the 10th day of Tirr in the Ethiopian calendar. The Orthodox Tewahdo faithful celebrate Timket holiday to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. This festival is best known for its ritual reenactment of baptism.
