Hundreds of Somalia’s security forces graduate from Ethiopian-led training program in Baidoa

Addis Ababa, March 6, 2025 (FMC) — Hundreds of Somali security forces have successfully graduated today in Baidoa after completing a rigorous six-month training program conducted by the Ethiopian African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) troops.

The training, which covered physical fitness, military drills, weapons handling, and counter-terrorism tactics, was designed to enhance the capabilities of Somali forces in addressing ongoing security challenges, AUSSOM stated this evening.

The graduation ceremony was attended by South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan (Laftagareen) and other senior officials, who praised Ethiopia’s steadfast support in strengthening Somalia’s security infrastructure. Their remarks underscored the critical role this partnership plays in ensuring regional stability.

Brigadier General Besfat Fente Tegene, Commander of Sector 3, emphasized the importance of the training in tackling Somalia’s security issues, urging the new graduates to take responsibility for protecting their communities.

Among the officials present at the event were Somali Second Deputy Prime Minister Abdisalan Abdi Ali, Interior and Reconciliation Minister Ali Yussuf Ali, Livestock, Forestry, and Range Minister Hassan Hussein Mohamed, and Planning Minister Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh, all of whom reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s security through continued collaboration with Ethiopia.

This graduation marks a key milestone in the ongoing efforts to build a more capable and resilient Somali security force, with Ethiopia continuing to play a vital role in supporting Somalia’s stability and security objectives.
