IMF chief commends Ethiopia on successful implementation of economic reforms

Addis Ababa, February 8, 2025 (FMC) – The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has praised Ethiopia on the successful implementation of recent economic reforms under the Homegrown Economic Reform Program agenda.

The IMF chief’s comment on the East African nation’s implementation of the comprehensive macroeconomic reforms surfaced after her meeting with high-level Ethiopian delegation, consisting of Minister of Finance Mr. Ahmed Shide, Governor of National Bank of Ethiopia Mr. Mamo Mihretu, and Minister of Planning & Development Ms. Fitsum Aseffa in Addis Ababa today.

According to the Ethiopian Finance Ministry, the meeting focused on Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms, the support provided by the IMF, and prospects for continued collaboration to advance the country’s economic agenda.

During the discussions, Ms. Georgieva commended the country on the successful implementation of recent economic reforms and acknowledged the significant progress made across multiple fronts.

Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide provided an overview of his government’s ongoing reform initiatives, emphasizing Ethiopia’s determination to establish itself as a beacon of prosperity in Africa.

It is worth noting that the IMF Managing Director arrived in Addis Ababa this morning for a two-day working visit and to engage in high-level discussions with the country’s leadership and key stakeholders.

She is expected to meet with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and senior government officials to discuss Ethiopia’s economic outlook, policy priorities, and ongoing reforms. The visit will also include interactions with representatives from the private sector, to exchange perspectives on the business environment and economic opportunities in Ethiopia. In addition to these engagements, the Managing Director will visit social and development sites.
