Japan provides new assistance package worth $15M to Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, February 7, 2025 (FMC) – In a press release via its embassy in Addis Ababa, the Government of Japan announced that it will fund a new assistance package worth approximately USD 15 million (about 1.9 billion Ethiopian Birr) to Ethiopia. in collaboration with the UN agencies and an international fund.
“Japan has been making its utmost effort to contribute to peace and prosperity in Ethiopia through financial and technical supports, and Japan will continue its commitment to enhance assistance for Ethiopia, the statement reads.
This new Assistance Package, according to the Japanese Embassy’s press release, consists of the humanitarian and development assistance and the assistance to Co-Creation projects with Ethiopia towards TICAD9.
First. the humanitarian and development assistance to Ethiopia is worth US$7.7 million.
This assistance focuses on humanitarian and development activities, considering the assistance needs discussed in the High-Level Development Forum. the Humanitarian Response Plan and Ethiopia’s Resilient, Recovery, and Reconstruction Framework (3RF). The assistance will be conducted in collaboration with UNHCR, WHO, UNDP, UNMAS, IOM, UNFPA, UNIDO, UNOCHA and Education Cannot Wait (ECW).
Secondly, the assistance to Co-Creation projects with Ethiopia towards TICAD9 is worth USD 7.3 million.
It was mentioned that these projects are utilising the Japanese technologies to solve economic and social issues in Ethiopia. and co-created by the government of Ethiopia. international organisations. the Japanese companies and the government of Japan. This assistance will be implemented in collaboration with UNICEF. UNFPA. WFP, UNDP, UN-Habilat and UNESCO-IICBA.
TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) is a conference launched by the Japanese government, co-hosted by UN, UNDP, World Bank and AUC.
It was mentioned that the TICAD9 will be held from August Ma to 22 this year, with the African heads of states, under the slogan ‘Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa’. Since 1993, TICAD has been the platform to advocate the partnership with Africa for more than 30 years.
