Ministry says over 7.5 billion seedlings to be planted in upcoming Green Legacy planting season

Addis Ababa, February 21, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) announced that 601 million quintals of crop was harvested so far this harvest season.

The ministry is reviewing half-year performance together with relevant institutions and regional bureaus.

On the occasion, Minister of Agriculture Mr. Girma Amente told the media that excellent results have been recorded in all agricultural sectors during this period.

He said that 601 million quintals of crop has been harvested so far during the 2024/25 harvest season, and 236 million quintals of crop has been harvested from the floriculture sector.

Girma indicated that over 3.5 million hectares of arable land has been covered with irrigated wheat cultivation so far.

The Minister said that in the first round of the floriculture sector, 925 thousand hectares of land were covered with seeds.

Under the livestock and fisheries development sector, YeLemat Trufat (Bounty of the Basket) program has exceeded national objectives.

The Minister stated that more than 1.9 million animals have been inseminated through artificial insemination, and 61.5 million one-day-old chicks have been distributed in the past six months.

He mentioned that 7.5 billion different types of tree seedlings are planned to be planted under the Green Legacy program in the fiscal year, and he indicated that 2.5 billion seedlings have been prepared for this purpose so far.
