MoWE Minister highlights Adwa Victory and GERD as symbols of national unity and achievement
Addis Ababa, February 27, 2025 (FMC) – Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa (PhD), stated that the Adwa Victory and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) represent enduring achievements emblematic of Ethiopia’s collective spirit.
He emphasized that the GERD is a remarkable epitome of resilience that showcases Ethiopians’ unity and ability to overcome perceived impossibilities, a narrative destined to be passed down through generations. He framed both milestones as significant reflections of collective effort and accomplishment.
Habtamu noted that the Adwa Victory stands as a pivotal achievement in the anti-colonial movement, serving as a source of pride not only for Ethiopians but for all people of African descent. He drew parallels between both victories, asserting that the valor, heroism, and national unity exhibited during the Battle of Adwa were mirrored in the successful construction of the Renaissance Dam, funded by the Ethiopian people’s own resources.
He remarked that the triumph at Adwa was a decisive blow against colonial powers and their prejudiced ideologies, while the GERD exemplifies a modern victory achieved through collaboration, guided by the Cooperation Framework Agreement on the Nile. Both achievements exemplify Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to self-determination and progress.
