PM Abiy Ahmed sends Adwa victory day message to Ethiopians
Addis Ababa, March 1, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has extended his best wishes to the Ethiopian people as they prepare to celebrate the 129th anniversary of the historic Adwa Victory, which will be observed on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
In his message, the Prime Minister reflected on the deep legacy of Ethiopia’s commitment to peace. “Ethiopians have always known the devastation that war brings. For this reason, they have always chosen peace, sometimes going to extraordinary lengths to avoid conflict. But when forced into a corner, they stand strong for peace,” Abiy said, highlighting the nation’s long history of resilience and patience in the face of threats.
He reminded the public that, prior to the Battle of Adwa, the fascist Italian forces had attempted to destabilize Ethiopia through subversive tactics, including recruiting mercenaries and spreading terror. Despite these efforts, Ethiopians maintained a calm resolve. “Ethiopia remained patient but prepared,” the Prime Minister stated. “They [Ethiopian patriots] understood that peace is protected by strength and readiness.”
Premier Abiy also reflected on the peaceful overtures extended by Ethiopia before the conflict. “Before the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia offered peace to the invading forces, but they misinterpreted the country’s patience as weakness,” he said. “Ethiopians are patient, but they are also prepared. They know that true peace is safeguarded through strength and resolve.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Battle of Adwa was ultimately a fight for peace, not for war. “The Battle of Adwa was not about revenge or hatred. We fought to preserve peace, and it is this principle that allowed us to move forward with dignity and forgiveness after the battle,” Abiy remarked.
He also praised the sacrifices made by Ethiopia’s ancestors, who fought not just for victory, but for the values of peace and human dignity. “We thank our mothers and fathers for their sacrifices, not only for their victory but also for their unwavering commitment to human values and peace,” the Prime Minister said.
“At the victory of Adwa, we demonstrated our value for sovereign humans with our handling of prisoners of war, our return to peaceful dialogue with enemies, and our work towards lasting peace,” Abiy added.
As Ethiopians prepare to mark this momentous anniversary, Abiy reminded them of their legacy as the children of the Adwa patriots. “We, too, prioritize peace. But like our forefathers, we are always ready to defend the country when necessary,” he concluded. “We are the children of the Adwa patriots, and we carry their legacy forward.”
