PM Abiy meets with WTO DG to discuss progress, next steps of Ethiopia’s accession to the organization

Addis Ababa, February 16, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today received and held talks with the Director-General of World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to discuss the progress and next steps of Ethiopia’s accession to the organization.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa at the Union’s headquarters.

Ethiopia has been engaged in the WTO accession process for years, with ongoing efforts to finalize the necessary requirements, Abiy said in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“Given the progress we made in our homegrown economic reform program, we remain committed to ensuring Ethiopia’s integration into the global trading system in a way that aligns with our national interests,” he underscored.

It is worth noting that the 38th AU Summit is expected to conclude today.
