Pres. Taye and AUC Chairperson discuss regional peace, security

Addis Ababa, April 9, 2025 (FMC) – The President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Atske-Selassie, held talks at his office today with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

It was indicated that their discussions focused on regional peace and security, the AU’s mediation efforts in South Sudan, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as ongoing institutional reforms within the AU, including financial sovereignty and sustainable funding for peace support operations.

President Taye assured the chairperson about the dedication of the Ethiopian government to working closely with the AU Commission, she stated.

The president also emphasized the importance of upholding the AU’s key priorities and agendas, fostering strong collaboration as a host country.

For his part, AU Chairperson Youssouf assured President Taye of his commitment to collaboratively working with Ethiopia as a member and host country.

The chairperson stressed the necessity of a strong partnership with Ethiopia as both a member state and the host nation.

“I have been honored to be received by His Excellency President Taye Atske Selasie. This is a courtesy call since I’ve assumed my position as the chair of the African Union Commission,” he said.

He recalled his previous working relationship with President Taye during their tenures as foreign ministers, highlighting their collaboration on bilateral and continental issues.

“I came first and foremost to pay my respect and tribute to him…. It has been a very constructive meeting. I have all many takeaways from this conversation,” Youssouf pointed out.
