Successful transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM crucial for Somalia’s stability, says AUC Chairperson

Addis Ababa, April 24, 2025 (FMC) — Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), stressed the critical importance of the successful transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in ensuring the long-term stability and security of Somalia.

In his address at the Extraordinary Summit of Troop-Contributing Countries (TCCs) to AUSSOM and Somalia, Youssouf emphasized that the transition is essential to consolidating the gains made in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab.

He noted that while the Somali Federal Government (SFG) has made significant strides in regaining territories, continued international support is vital for securing these achievements.

Youssouf acknowledged the financial challenges facing the mission but reiterated that the success of the transition depends on the collective efforts of African Union member states and international partners.

He emphasized that a failure to complete the transition could jeopardize the peace and stability Somalia has worked hard to achieve.

“The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM is crucial. It is not just about continuing the mission; it is about ensuring the long-term success of peace in Somalia,” Youssouf said, calling on all stakeholders to contribute to the mission’s success.

The AUC Chairperson commended the progress made by Somali forces, bolstered by ATMIS, in securing key territories.

He also praised the Somali Federal Government’s political efforts in state-building but urged for greater inclusivity by reaching out to all Federal States to ensure broader participation in the peace process.

In conclusion, Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia, stressing that the successful transition to AUSSOM will pave the way for lasting peace, not only in Somalia but across the Horn of Africa.

“The African Union and its member states will continue to support Somalia and demonstrate full solidarity with the government and people of Somalia,” he concluded.
