Vietnamese PM to visit Ethiopia soon

Addis Ababa, April 15, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has confirmed that his Vietnamese counterpart Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính will soon visit Ethiopia, marking a new chapter in the growing bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The Ethiopian PM made the announcement after the two leaders met in Hanoi during PM Abiy’s official visit to Vietnam — the first by an Ethiopian head of government since diplomatic ties were established in 1976. Premier Abiy traveled to Hanoi on 14th April 2025 for an official working visit at the invitation of the Vietnamese Premier.

Following an official welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the two leaders held extensive talks on political and economic cooperation. They presided over the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on trade and education cooperation, as well as a civil aviation agreement that paves the way for direct flights between Addis Ababa and Hanoi via Ethiopian Airlines.

“Our discussions have paved the way for strengthened political, diplomatic, and economic ties between our two countries,” Abiy stated. “I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính to Ethiopia in the near future — an occasion that will further solidify our joint vision for deepened bilateral relations in today’s global context.”

As part of his visit, Prime Minister Abiy also met with the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Tô Lâm, where they exchanged views on political party matters, governance, and national development. The meeting highlighted strong party-to-party relations between the Prosperity Party of Ethiopia and the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The visit, which also includes PM Abiy’s participation in the 4th Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) Summit, underscores both countries’ commitment to sustainable development and global cooperation. It also comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of Ethiopia-Vietnam diplomatic relations, to be celebrated in 2026.

Despite longstanding ties and mutual support at multilateral forums, economic exchanges have remained modest. The agreements signed during this visit aim to unlock new opportunities, especially in trade, investment, aviation, technology, and education, signaling the beginning of a more dynamic and strategic partnership.
