Youth must honor ancestral sacrifices to propel African unity, economic progress, says Pan-Africanist
Addis Ababa, February 9, 2025 (FMC) – In an exclusive interview with Fana Media Corporation (FMC), Zemdena Abebe, a Pan-Africanist and advocate for women’s rights, emphasized the vital role of young people in reinforcing the African Union’s (AU) influence in global affairs.
According to Zemdena, a robust continental organization involving participation of the youth is essential for highlighting the resilience and capabilities of Africans in organizing resources and ideas for a brighter future.
The upcoming AU Summit symbolizes a cultural renaissance for the youth, fostering greater connections and exchanges among African nations, highlighting the diverse cultural and linguistic heritages across the continent.
“Apart from crucial political dialogues, the sharing of our cultures, cuisine, music, and arts is crucial in strengthening our bonds,” Zemdena stated. She pointed out that events in one nation inevitably affect others, and highlighted the need to forge shared commitment amongst Africans to pursue peace, development, solidarity, and economic transformation. This, she said, would help the people of the continent overcome lingering challenges such as conflict, joblessness and the threat of neo-colonialism and ensure sustainable growth.
Drawing parallels between the historic Victory of Adwa and present-day aspirations, Zemdena noted that this landmark event not only symbolizes past struggles but also serves as a lasting source of inspiration for future generations. She believes it exemplifies the courage and determination of Africans to overcome obstacles, showcasing that unity is key to addressing hunger, conflict, and other societal issues.
Zemdena also addressed the perception of Africa in international media, asserting that there is much to be proud of as an African. “Our ancestors have endowed us with wisdom and resilience,” she said, stressing the importance of recognizing the shared heritage among Africans globally, including those in the US and the Caribbean.
Praising the growing enthusiasm among youth for Pan-African ideals, Zemdena urged them to educate themselves about the sacrifices made by their ancestors for independence. She shared her personal journey in promoting Pan-African unity, highlighting her involvement in consultations leading to the African Youth Charter’s adoption.
Zemdena called for women and youth to engage in open dialogues and cross-cultural exchanges, emphasizing that empowering these groups in economic, innovation, and technology sectors is crucial for achieving a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
